The figures in this work emerged with no real planning on my part.  After freeing myself from the confines of organized religion, these paintings were an exploration of my inner liminal landscape.  I began to realize that these women and men were aspects of my new personal mythology in which deity is not separate from the individual, and the concept of male and female is an illusory dichotomy.  You will notice that many of these figures take on the poses of deity from a variety of spiritual traditions.

I made some of these paintings while in London and others back home when I was pining for the place, clutching old photographs of friends and familiar strangers I saw daily on those winding streets.

In these pieces I am experimenting with amateur snapshots.  I think most people take these kinds of posed photos to capture places and people exactly as they were at some point in time. Instead of creating photorealistic images, I tried to depersonalize the images by playing with unnatural color, big painterly brushstrokes and focusing on texture or shape rather than the beloved faces these photos typically try to immortalize.  This series is my tongue in cheek way of elevating the horrible compositions of amateur family photography into fine art.  Most of these works feature my own predominately Latter-Day Saint family and other Mormon folks I used to know and admire in my earlier days as a Latter-day Saint.  I've left the belief system behind now but will always love these kind people.
